Microsuction is widely recognised as the safest and most effective method for ear wax removal, offering immediate relief for most people. However, it’s not uncommon to still feel a slight sense of blockage or fullness in the ears after treatment.

If this happens, it doesn’t mean something has gone wrong and isn’t a cause for immediate concern. Here’s what might be happening, what you can do, and when to seek further advice from your ear care specialist.

Why Your Ears Might Still Feel Blocked After Microsuction

Even after all visible wax is removed, a few temporary sensations can linger. These are usually harmless and tend to resolve within a day or two.

1. Your Ear Is Adjusting to Clearer Hearing

When wax has been present for a long time, your ears become used to muffled sound. Once it’s removed, everyday noises can feel louder or slightly distorted for a short while as your ears and brain readjust.

2. Minor Residue or Moisture

Sometimes, tiny traces of wax or natural moisture remain in the ear canal. These are typically expelled naturally over time. Avoid using cotton buds or inserting anything into the ear, as this can cause irritation.

3. Swelling or Inflammation

A small amount of irritation can occur after microsuction — especially if the wax was compacted or the ear canal was already sensitive. This can make the ear feel temporarily “blocked” even though it’s clear.

4. A Blockage Deeper in the Ear

In rare cases, a deeper issue such as an ear infection, fluid buildup (glue ear), or Eustachian tube dysfunction may cause the sensation of blockage. If the feeling doesn’t subside within a few days, professional assessment is advised.

What You Can Do at Home

While the ear naturally heals and adjusts, there are a few simple steps you can take to ease the sensation:

  • Keep ears dry for 24–48 hours after treatment. Avoid swimming or direct water entry into the ear canal.

  • Avoid inserting anything into your ears, including cotton buds or tissues.

  • Use olive oil or Earol spray if advised by your specialist — this can help keep the ear canal hydrated and comfortable.

  • Stay upright as much as possible — this allows the ear canal to remain open and promotes natural drainage.

Most clients notice improvement within a couple of days. If symptoms persist, it’s best to contact your ear care professional for reassurance and further advice.
